The Nose Ring

I’ve always hated the word “YOLO,” but I’ve been in a really Yolo-ey type of mood lately.

I think it has to do with being 35 1/2. Or maybe it’s because I blinked and my baby boy is about to turn 11. Or maybe it’s because Lucy wants toenail polish and a boyfriend.

Or maybe it’s because I finally started taking antidepressants to help with my anxiety.

Or maybe it was Kaitlyn on The Bachelorette.

I mean gosh, it could be anything. But whatever it is, I’ve realized that life is just too short.

I’ve wanted a nose ring for about 10 years now. About five years ago I seriously considered getting one, but my husband was very much NOT on board with the idea. I even went so far as to trick him with a fake nose ring, and his reaction, though hilarious, was pretty pitiful. So I shelved the idea until recently when I realized that I’m 35 (and a HALF!!) and I either need to do it or not.

So, I did it.

And no regrets!

It was surprisingly easy — it took about 15 minutes from the time I walked in to the tattoo/piercing place to when I walked out. The cost was about $40 and the pain was nowhere near as bad as I’d expected.

I had been expecting a very sharp pinch/stabbing pain and a clicking sound but there was none of that. I didn’t even know he had done it yet!! It just felt like a quick, hard squeeze. I didn’t even make a noise or a flinch, but my eye on the side where my nose was pierced just watered a little bit.

My husband…is okay with it. He doesn’t hate it or love it. He kind of just has the “if it makes you happy” attitude, which is fine. I’ve never been one of those women who worries about how my husband feels about my clothes or the hair style I choose. I know that he loves me and I want to be happy with me. Sometimes that means trying new things. Whatever I do, he’ll get used to it!

Right now, that means getting used to a wife with a (very small) nose ring. Could be worse!

Lucy loves it. She wants her own, but when I told her it would hurt she said, “OOOOHHHH. Okay. No.” She’s such a girly girl, always wanting to adorn herself with sparkles and polish and fuss. I love it!!

Jon David is the least happy of all. He says it’s because he does not like change, but I suspect it’s because he’s embarrassed because he thinks I’m too old for a piercing.

Part of life is being embarrassed by your parents, so he can just deal with it. Also, it’s kind of pay back for all the times he embarrassed me in the grocery store as a toddler.

Life, dude. Life is hard.

What is one thing you’ve wanted to do but haven’t done yet? And more importantly — how can we make these things happen?

(And also yes, my nose is sore. But only a tiny bit. It’s not bad at all)

LETS DO ALL THE THINGS!! YOLO!!
